The Challenge:
Sierra Leone’s construction sector suffers from a lack of affordable, high-quality materials. Imports are expensive and inaccessible outside cities and locally-produced bricks are poor quality. Hydraform technology remains underused, and clients face unreliable contractors and rising costs. Safe, affordable housing is out of reach for many.
The Solution:
Kolat uses Hydraform soil-cement block technology to produce durable, low-carbon, low-cost bricks. With capacity for 6,000 bricks/day, Kolat has sold 2M+ bricks. Its construction services, launched in 2022, offer pre-designed home packages. Kolat also trains local youth in partnership with GIZ and the EU, helping scale both production and impact.
